Lincoln and Buick are the best land yacht s , this is top level. IMO totally worth $4900 and would be a treat to drive.

Stunning. And a bargain at that price if it’s not a bondo queen.

Though tha t door card is an odd thing to be missing - and will be a headache to replace.

I had a ‘68 electra, brown, black laudau top, 430 CI engine. Wonderful dangerous car. Crazy smooth, pretty fast, and the worst handling this side of the e Ex xon Valdez .

I have a soft spot for old Lincolns.

I think that would fit on my trailer...

Lol - 64 Olds 88 coupe for me. White with a stunning red interior that was immaculate.

Also no outside mirrors, no seat belts, and barely any brakes but it did have a strong 394 and the oddball Roto trans.

Mine was the 465 Wildcat engine, which was obscenely fast and surprisingly good on fuel if you kept your foot out of it. Handling wise I found it very enjoyable as well, it was light and responsive while staying quite flat in corners. I won’t say it handled like a sports car, but it handled very well for a big ass cruiser.

You could turn the steering wheel about 30 degrees either side before the car started to change direction. I will say it jumped well tho.

4 wheel drum brakes that almost don’t work are what grow hair on your chest regardless of your gender.

Yeah at one point I recall that the brakes weren’t capable of locking up the wheels on dry pavement.

Yikes.

Dear Mrs. LV,

This is the kind of car Cary Grant would have driven Audrey Hepburn in. When you cruise down a boulevard (yes, that’s right, this car transforms ordinary streets into boulevards), the magic and mystique living in its sheet metal becomes yours. It perfuses your very being. You become glamorous, a timeless classic with eternal youth beyond the ability of any young urchins that might be in the back seat to suck from you. People will gawk in admiration. They will whisper. They will be envious .

Plus, think of all the stuff and/or kids you could store out of sight in the trunk.

You need this. You deserve this. You owe it to yourself.

Also, remember to let your husband drive it once in a while* .

*He told me to remember that part.

The 430 was replaced by the 462 cu in (7.6 L) engine in 1966. Bore and stroke were entirely different at 4.38 111.3 mm × 97.3 mm (4.38 in × 3.83 in) and the 462 MEL engine produced 340 hp (254 kW) and as much as 485 lbft (658 Nm) of torque. This engine was fitted with hydraulic lifters and a four-barrel Carter AFB carburetor . This large torquey engine was used only in Lincoln Continentals, from 1966 until mid-year in 1968 when it was replaced by the 385-series 460. Production ended after 1968. The production facilities in Lima were converted to produce the new Ford 385 engine family.

Weird, mine wasn’t like that at all. Likewise all the suspension parts were replaced, so that may have made it a lot better, but I don’t remember it being sloppy on the drive home either.

Can attest to this. I had one working brake up front when I brought it home.

Once it had fresh brakes on all 4 corners you’d never know it was 4 wheel drum though, holy hell would that old girl shave off speed quick. Suppose it helps when your drums are like this:

And this right here: 485 lbft   is why these old cruisers felt so damn fast and were able to pull respectable fuel economy despite their weight and BB.

I’d have no interest in owning that bomber, but I’d love to go drive $100 worth of gasoline through one on a pleasant Saturday afternoon.

If it’s anything like my Electra was, $100 would run it back and forth to work for a month.

I’d expect that old Lincoln to get maybe 12 mpg on the highway and about 4 mpg the way I’d be driving it.

My Electra would average 23 mpg in mixed driving if I was driving like a normal person.

If I got into the secondaries however, the gas gauge dropped almost as fast as the speedo climbed.....

What model year?

I learnt to drive on a ‘77 Caprice Classic with the venerable [NOT!] 305 V8 and the Turbo H ydramatic 250 transmission, which went out and almost stranded us 200 miles from home (it shifted into 3rd gear, finally, on the Interstate, and Dad never stopped until we got home.) I loved that car...

1966 Electra 225 sedan.

Had the 425 Nailhead (465 Wildcat) with a turbo400 trans behind it. It was geared long, but with 465ft-lbs of torque and 340hp, it didn’t matter. Once the secondaries opened up she was gone.

Surely you’ve seen pics of her before:

If I saw this car, it was long before you and I began corresponding. Why’d you get rid of it?

Do you watch Roadkill? One engine that always stands alone with that lot is the 440 Chrysler. My grandfather had a Chrysler Newport with a 440 and he spoke to me once when I was very young about how satisfying it was to get on the freeway with it. Which makes me think of a thing: when I was a young one, probably not more than 8 years old, I asked him about automatic transmission and I can remember him driving and making a hand motion to point out when the gears shifted. Pappy, we called him. If what my religion tells me turns out to be accurate, then I will enjoy seeing Pappy again later, once I’ve shed my mortal coil. There is much that I do that I would enjoy showing him and I think he’d very much enjoy seeing. I think I am more skilled than Pappy was, certainly much more well educated and enlightened, and if we want our young to surpass our own accomplishments in their own lives, then I suspect he’d approve.

Well now: there  was a maudlin digression...

Long story short: Our truck needed injectors again, didn’t have the coin to buy them.

Looking back I should have just kept the Electra and sold the truck as it sat at a loss. We would have came out ahead in the long run and I’d still have a great cruiser.
